Belladonna Bess

An edible garden in Wellington, NZ

Weeds, botrytis and marrows December 30, 2010

Filed under: Garden — belladonnabess @ 4:03 pm

I was away for a week, during which I got 65 mm of rain. As a result I’ve got abundant weeds, botrytis (on my strawberries, where it has no redeeming features) and marrows.

Eating: strawberries, raspberries (a few Waiau left, mainly Qualicum now), currants, gooseberries, zucchinis, carrots, lettuce, beetroot, peas, potatoes. But mostly slightly oversize zucchinis.

Worrying: I have a lot of work to do now. It’s completely out of control.

Summer rain December 18, 2010

After a couple of months of dry, I’ve had at least 30 mm of rain (and there has been more tonight). The following is from yesterday, but I didn’t have time to write it up until now.

Eating: raspberries, strawberries, redcurrants. One day I ate so many strawberries that I felt slightly ill, and when I went to harvest the raspberries, I didn’t really feel like eating them. A few zucchini, beetroot, carrots and lots of lettuce.

Freezing: currants and raspberries. Not a huge amount, but nice to have some of my own frozen.

Planting: potatoes (mostly Desiree), tomato, cucumber, capsicum and chilli seedlings that had been sitting around (the tomato and cucumber were mostly ones I grew myself, the others bought).

Raspberry time December 3, 2010

Eating: raspberries. Not enough for any to make it inside, but several a day. Plus quite a few strawberries. A couple of boysenberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, redcurrents. The first three I just don’t have much, the redcurrants though should be quite plentiful soon.

Also eating: my first zucchini of the season (it was a little small, and I’m some way from a glut yet), baby carrots, cavallo nero kale, lettuce, a few potatoes, broad beans (nearly finished).

Anticipating: Jersey Benne potatoes, gooseberries (still not ripening).

Watering: lots.

Weeding: part of greens bed so I could plant the celery.

Mulching: hazelnuts.
