An edible garden in Wellington, NZ

Remembering: I’ve made quite a bit of progress. This is how my garden looked early last summer.

The middle picture shows the digger that helped with the construction of my new retaining wall.

The last picture shows my side of the finished wall, with the mostly empty garden. My garden ends at the fence posts.

I’ll have to take some photos to show what it looks like now. It’s a bit stark, since it’s the middle of winter, but there are actually plants in it other than the weedy lawn.

This is my garden diary – me keeping track of what I have done and what is going on in my garden.

When I started trying to plan a food garden in Wellington, I wasn’t really sure what would grow and what wouldn’t. I’ve grown food gardens in Auckland and Christchurch, but the Wellington climate and soils are a little more challenging. I had a hard time finding information online, so thought maybe this would be of use to others too.

My garden is not quite 100 square metres in Khandallah, on a gentle, north-west facing  slope.  It gets all-day sun and although the soil has a clay base, it is reasonably free-draining. I’m very sheltered from the southerly, but get the northerly. Rather than get the full force of the northerly wind, I get gusts from several directions. The wind is probably my greatest problem and the garden is really too small to put in much in the way of shelter.

“Before” pictures

The following post has a few “before” pictures, from December 2008. The post is now a bit hard to find so I’ve linked it here.
